Acupuncture Therapies
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture was developed in ancient China as a method for treating diseases and maintaining health in humans and animals. Acupuncture typically utilizes small metal needles which are inserted into specific points on the body in order to produce a beneficial effect for the patient. The insertion of the needle results in local effects at the site of the needle, systemic effect on blood flow and organ function, and beneficial effects on the brain and central nervous system. Some beneficial effects of acupuncture include increase in blood flow to tissues, decrease in muscle tension and spasms, increase release of anti-inflammatory mediators, pain relief, and relaxation of the patient. There are many conditions that affect pets that can be treated with veterinary acupuncture. Research has shown that acupuncture can significantly reduce pain in patients. It can also benefit pets with neurologic conditions, digestive disorders, kidney disease, and skin conditions. Acupuncture is non-invasive treatment that can be used along with other conventional and/or natural therapies to treat illness and to maintain the health of pets.
